Understanding Student Health Care In Ontario

Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) provides basic medical health insurance for permanent residents of Ontario and is funded by provincial taxes. OHIP is Ontario’s health care plan and provides many of the basic health and medical services you may need.

If you’re an international or exchange student currently enrolled in an Ontario university, the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) provides many of the same health services and treatments that are covered by OHIP.

When going to hospital and doctor’s office visits, remember to bring proof of your OHIP or UHIP cards.

For students enrolled in college or university, you may also have supplementary coverage. Supplementary health insurance plans work in combination with UHIP to ensure international students have coverage where UHIP does not. These plans are managed by your student union. For example, coverage is offered to full-time students, part-time students, and graduate students at University of Toronto (UofT) and may vary depending on enrollment status.
